Welcome

There are exciting times ahead for Birches Head High School. Our focus is as always on achievement and we are proud of the successes our students are continually achieving and striving for. In May 2011 Ofsted described the school as a school that has steadily and consistently improved to become a good school” where “purposeful direction from the head teacher and senior team and improved leadership from subject and departmental heads have ensured that the school’s improvement strategies have made a positive impact on provision and outcomes for students since the last inspection.”

Once again in 2012 students taking GCSE’s gained the best ever results the school has ever had. As a school community we are proud of our students and as Ofsted found our students are “proud of their school and take pleasure in participating in a variety of activities beyond the school day. They are effective members of their community and many are involved in leadership activities, for example in school ‘action teams’ providing advice on learning and developing school policies or working in the local community as sports or dance leaders or on charity fund-raising events.”

Importantly we are a school that believes both academic and pastoral support are important and as a consequence “students are well known to staff and their needs are carefully considered.”In 2010 we became a Co-operative Foundation Trust School. This has meant that all our community can be active members in shaping and influencing the school and community partnerships as members of our co-operative “TILT”. In September 2012 both Abbey Hulton Primary School and Forest Park Primary School have with Birches head formed a shared co-operative Trust with all schools working with our TILT partners and members to ensure young people in our community get the best opportunities available. Partnership is central to all we do at Birches Head whether this is partnerships within or external to the school. Our partnerships with the creative sector, further education, higher education external services and business are enriching the educational experience of our students and staff supporting improving achievements as well as enriching the lives of our young people. This has created a school where that has “an innovative curriculum and good quality of care, guidance and support that ensures the needs of all students are well met. Consequently, students enjoy their learning, respond positively to their teachers and feel they are well cared for and encouraged to achieve their best.“ (Ofsted May 11)

Young people at Birches Head High School have been important partners within the school. The work they have achieved through the school action teams has made a lasting difference to creating a school that responds to the needs of young people. We are proud of what they have achieved and what they will achieve in the future.
