Global Acts of Unity – Mike Haines OBE

Mike Haines OBE, shares the tragic story of the kidnap and murder of his brother David Haines by ISIS in 2014.

At the beginning of March 2013, David Haines travelled with a French organisation called ACTED to help refugees in Syria. Barely a week later, Mike got a phone call from ACTED telling him that David had been kidnapped by a group calling themselves the ‘Islamic State’, otherwise known as ISIS.

Within the space of a month in the late summer of 2014, ISIS posted footage online of the murder of three of their hostages. The first two were Americans, Jim Foley and Stephen Sotloff, and the third was David. David’s barbaric and very public death was a huge shock to the Haines family, and it left them truly bereft.

In the sessions Mike will share the story of his brother David and how Mike is determined to tackled hatred head on and show defiance of the aims of terrorism, by spreading a message of unity, tolerance and understanding through his campaign Global Acts of Unity. The sessions are very interactive and tackle some tough topics, with the view to encouraging young people to develop their critical thinking skills and to take a stand against hate.

It went well the students received a pledge card to be kind which is shown below
