Students Complete Killer Mile

'BHHS students and staff have successfully completed the renowned Mow Cop Killer Mile as part of a fund raising event that the year 9 football team had organised to raise money for a new football kit and other much needed accessories.

Mr Walker also joined in on the day of the run as a seasoned Killer Mile runner. There was much discussion about this event, especially between the 2 members of the physical education department and the results of the event were:

1st: Mr Walker
2nd: Mr Bloor
3rd: Mr Walklate

The race started well and neither Mr Bloor nor myself had ever seen the course. Not sure if this was good psychology or bad! I think at this point for those who have not worked out why its called the ‘killer mile’ it’s because every step of the 1600m is up a huge hill (Kilimanjaro Esq.). It was Mr Walker who set the early pace, Walklate perched just behind and Bloor at the back. To the half way point all was good and then, what can only be described as, the end of the world in hill terms was ahead. This incline was massive. At one point I thought I saw people falling off, the gradient was that harsh. It was then when I hit the Wall and Bloor came past in pursuit of the geographical whippet Walker. That’s how it stayed!

The boy’s race was before ours and they too suffered!! Liam Craig put in an excellent performance and finished 12th which was outstanding considering the majority of the field were club runners. The lads were fantastically behaved and did everything they could to attract the attention of the media, whether it was camera or radio! The evening was a huge success and everyone who took part really enjoyed it. Thanks to all those who sponsored either lads or the staff and you can still make a donation if you are feeling generous.

Next year we want to make this a big event, its great fun, admittedly hard work, but a great sense of achievement when you finally get to the top.  I have given myself a serious lecture on my failure and embarked on my training plan for next year!'
