In September 2019 Birches Head Academy was picked by DesignLab Nation, at the V&A’s Museum to take part in a program which included a number of schools across the country. The program delivered design projects to secondary schools working in Sheffield, Stoke on Trent and Sunderland. Our students at Birches Head worked on a project with the Artist Neil Brownsword which took them through a journey of all things clay. Visiting potclays, dump sites, the Potteries Museum and the finally looking at a collection of Staffordshire Pottery at the V&A. Our Students saw how clay was sort, how it was made and what it could turn into. Students searched land in Middleport looking for shards of pottery that had been dumped by industries gone by for inspiration, sketches and impressions in clay were made and finally went to Johnson Tiles in Tunstall where the designs were turned into tiles. These tiles are now in an exhibition at Hanley Museum in conjunction with the Victoria and Albert Museum London.
The display of students work will be on from 20th July and continue over the summer holidays in the Ceramics Gallery of The Potteries Museum. A selection of students best work, from all three schools who took part in the project, will be on display.
